A cosy workshop at night with a bolted door, shelves of tools, notebooks, a chessboard and locked drawers

Apps Library

A lot of everyday software now keeps your work on a company's servers. You can use it only for as long as that company decides to keep offering it, on terms you can still accept.

Udal Apps keeps your work on your own computer, encrypted, and the apps keep working with no internet and no account. There are about fifty so far, games included, and the suite grows with each release.

Works on its ownInstall what you want. Nothing runs that you didn't start.

You choose what to install, what to connect and what stays offline. Nothing runs in the background that you didn't start.

The cloud is treated as someone else's computer. Apps only reach out when you decide they should, and your data is encrypted before it leaves your device.

Local only, or connectedYour choice, and you can change your mind at any time.

Local only. The apps run with no network at all. There is no way out and no way in, so there is nothing to intercept or leak.

Connected to the ordinary web. Apps that need the internet, such as email, use ClearNet.

Connected to people over Udal Tunnel. Apps that share with other people, such as co-editing a document or playing a two-player game, use Udal Tunnel. There is no business or server in the middle, and nothing is shared until you allow it.

The apps work the same way whichever you choose. Only the network around them changes.

First-party apps, and room for moreOne trusted place to get software.

The apps that ship with Udal are signed off by the project and built to share the same vault and the same identity, so they work together rather than as a pile of separate programs.

Third-party apps are not available yet. When they come they will be signed and checked plugins that sit alongside the suite rather than inside it. Their makers set their own terms, so some may be free and some paid.

The idea comes from desktop Linux, where you get software from one trusted software centre instead of random websites. Nothing gets sideloaded from a corner of the internet you have to hope is safe.

Sandboxed and encryptedTrying an app can't cost you your machine or your data.

Each app runs in a sandbox. It can't reach into your device or into another app's data. Every data store is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, with keys derived using Argon2id.

You can always leave. If you stop using Udal, you take everything of yours with you.

FreeFunded by coffee and spare change.

The suite is free to use and will stay free. Nothing about you is sold to pay for it. It is funded by coffee and spare change, so if it earns a place in your day, you can buy the makers a coffee.

Some third-party apps may charge, once they are available.
